  • Is your dog a hero?

    Posted on by Cat

We urgently need to update our blood donor registry and are looking for donors to join our list of existing canine heroes.

Occasionally our patients need emergency blood transfusions due to bleeding or clotting disorders and half a litre of blood can be life saving. When this happens we reach for our list and call our volunteer blood donors.

Donors can have a light sedative for the procedure which takes about 20 minutes, then we offer a treat afterwards of course. And your dog’s next vaccination and annual health check is on us as a thank you!

Today Finola, a Labrador belonging to our very own vet nurse Rachael McKenzie, kindly donated blood to give to a little spaniel with an auto-immune blood disorder. Undoubtedly she has given the patient the best chance of survival.

So could your dog qualify to be a blood donor? Here are some requirements:

    1.  Age one to eight years old
    2. Weight more than 25kg
    3. Have a good temperament
    4. Never have travelled abroad
    5. Be up to date on all vaccinations
    6. Be fit and healthy
    7. Not be on any medication

If you think your dog meets these requirements, or if you have some questions about the volunteer program, please contact the surgery.
