Whilst out hacking Chaz managed to injure himself by sitting on a fence. His rider immediately called Onley Equine Vets .

The wound was around 50cm in length and breached the underlying muscle.

The wound was clipped and cleaned and then thoroughly flushed with sterile saline to remove foreign material and bacteria. Sedation and infiltration of the wound edges with local anaesthetic enabled closure of the wound. This was achieved in 3 layers: a muscle layer, a subcutaneous layer and a skin layer. Damaged tissue leaks fluid and if this accumulates underneath the wound it can force the wound apart and prevent it from healing. A drain was therefore placed within the wound to prevent this from happening.

It was recommended that Chaz was confined to his box during the healing process as any movement can increase the likelihood of wound break down.

The drain was removed five days later and the stitches were removed at two weeks.

We are happy to inform you that Chaz is now back in light work and doing really well.
