With lots of our clients belonging to the Red Tractor Scheme we wanted to update you on some of the changes they are bringing in. From the 1st June 2018, all Red Tractor farms MUST have a written, annual livestock health and performance review which has been seen, discussed and signed by a vet.
These changes mean we must have to have visited your farm at least once during the last year. We will have needed to look at health and performance records that may highlight any issues and write any recommendations based on these. The review will also include medicine records outlining antimicrobials (antibiotics) sold to ensure that industry wise responsible use of antimicrobials is upheld. Certain critical antimicrobials will be reviewed with view to reduce their use in line with industry
targets. Their use will only be allowed following testing to ensure these are the only products suitable for the problem. Prophylactic treatments, such as for watery mouth or pneumonias, will need to be discussed and possibly reviewed to look at alternative strategies.
It is also recommended that at least one member of staff has attended a course or attended a training day on the safe and responsible use to administer medicines. We will be advertising a workshop session to cover these in the coming weeks so please stay tuned or register an interest with reception now.
In order for us to meet the requirements for these new standards we will require anyone undertaking a health and performance review to have the appropriate data ready for us. This includes a record of all deaths on the farm and the number of cases of common conditions such as lameness and pneumonia. For more information on what is required please visit the Red Tractor website where a Health and Performance Review form is available or contact us to send one out.
Please also allow enough time between organising a meeting to discuss your farm and your Red Tractor inspection so that we can produce the required paperwork.
A health and performance review will be charged at £50 and includes discussion of mortality data, conditions treated over the year, antimicrobial sales data and any recommendations based on this. Paperwork for this can often be completed on the day of the discussion. Please note visit fees to the farm will be charged separately.
More in-depth health plans will be charged at £150 for a new plan and £100 per year to update this. This plan includes a much more detailed review of the farm including personalised reports on current and potential disease profiles, recommendations for worming and vaccination protocols plus antimicrobial sales data. For all our Suckler Contract members, production and annual review of a full health plan is included as part of the scheme.
We enjoy these discussions as they enable us to get to know your farm better and help us to identify any way we can help you achieve your aims for the business.
