  • Joint Aid Elite case study

    Posted on by Abii Dowdy

Lenny, a 21 year old Irish Sport Horse, had been receiving a standard glucosamine supplement in his feed for over a year with no noticeable improvement. Many “off the shelf” supplements don’t contain the correct daily doses of glucosamine; as a product, Glucosamine is thought to counteract cartilage degradation and the inflammatory response in osteoarthritis but has to be fed at certain levels to help the horse.

In the run-up to the Royal London Show (based at Keysoe Equestrian in September), Lenny’s owner opted to trial our Joint Aid Elite supplement to see if it could help improve his willingness to work on the flat. As well as 99% pure glucosamine, this supplement also contains elements of boswellia serrata, hyaluronic acid, MSM and chondroitin.

The combined use of glucosamine and chondroitin has been shown to be even more effective at reducing cell based inflammation than glucosamine alone. Oral hyaluronic acid has been demonstrated to be effective in treating lameness associated with joint swelling and osteoarthritis. MSM contains sulphur a necessary building block for cartilage in joints. Boswellia Serrata is a natural plant extract which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting certain pro-inflammatory cytokines.

“When schooling at home and in training sessions he’s always been difficult to ride in an outline. He struggles to maintain muscle mass and often refuses to work through his hind end.”

8 weeks before the show his owner switched to the Joint Aid Elite supplement and carried on training as usual. Over the course of the following 6 weeks (once the 2 week loading dose had been administered) Lenny was noticeably more supple and could work in an outline and through his back end for much longer periods of time. Because he was working correctly he managed to maintain muscle mass (something he always seemed to struggle with being a veteran horse) and the judge at the Royal London Show also commented on “how well schooled” he was.
