  • Fracture

Cause: nearly always traumatic – a kick or abnormal rotational force/load applied to the bone.

Signs: acute onset, usually severe lameness following the trauma.

Treatment: this varies depending on the type of fracture, the bone affected and the age of horse. Box rest, heavy dressings/casting and surgery can all be used. Some fractures are catastrophic necessitating prompt euthanasia due to a hopeless prognosis.
