Work Experience at Towcester Vets
Work experience forms part of a school’s education programme and enables pupils to gain first-hand experience of work in order to increase their knowledge of different workplaces and to interact with skilled professionals. Our week-long programme helps students to understand employer expectations and the dynamic relationships between colleagues and departments, and gives a key introduction to life within the veterinary industry.
Meeting criteria
Towcester Vets are happy to accept pupils who contact the practice independently or through their school or college, providing all the paperwork has been completed and all of the health and safety parameters have been met. The age of the student should be considered; ideally, it is advised that pupils are at least 16 years old, which is partly based upon the student being able to maximise their time during the placement and partly due to the level of maturity and confidence required with regard to communication.
Observing practice life
During the placement there is usually more than enough to observe, particularly if rotation between departments and teams is possible. Towcester Vets are fortunate enough to be able to offer time in theatre, diagnostics, intensive care and medicine teams, in all three areas of practice including small animal, equine and on occasion farm practice.
Tasks
Learning is encouraged in every aspect of tasks undertaken. Pupils are expected to arrive on time and show an interest and keenness to learn in all manner of situations. It is advisable to record notes in a notebook. A supervisor will always be allocated to each pupil and this person will act as the point of contact during the placement.
Feedback
Schools and colleges may require feedback reports and some pupils may request a reference letter to confirm attendance on the placement. Please make this known at the time of application.
